Books Recommended for the course - What in God's Name are You Doing with Your Life?

Bass, Dorothy, Practicing Our Faith: A Way of Life for a Searching People.  Bass divides life into topics such as hospitality, love, etc. and then provides a way of re-thinking ordinary life into sacred and intentional spiritual discipline.

Borg, Marcus, The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith (How We Can Be Passionate Believers Today).  Borg describes the tension between the Traditional Church - expectations, rhythms and roles and the people who are comfortable with that spirituality vs. the Emrging Church, appealing to people seeking spiritual expression, but resisting common institutional church structures.  As a Christ-like practice he encourages an Open Heart and seeking the Thin Places.

Callahan, Kennon, The Twelve Keys for Living: Possibilities for a Whole, Healthy Life.  Callahan sets up an approach of measuring or discerning, and then divides life into topics such as mission, compassion, hope, wisdom, creativity, etc.  He suggests that focus on nine out of twelve keys might be a reasonable goal, and provides some structure for focus on weakest or celebration of strongest areas.
Funk, Mary Margaret, Thoughts Matter: The Practice of Spiritual Life.  Reviews some traditional monastic approaches and then divides life by topic:  food, sex, things, anger, etc.
Palmer, Parker, Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation.  In this slender volume, Parker Palmer takes a holistic approach to listening for the voice of God within and then amplifying it.
Shore, Bill, The Cathedral Within: Transforming Your Life by Giving Something Back.  Shore points out that a life fulfilled is a life with meaning, usually brought about by pursuing a goal beyond selfish parameters.
Tharp, Twyla, The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life.  Because, like spirituality, creativity does not just "hatch" whole and complete out of a life, Tharp reminds us that any gift needs nurturing and honing with disciplined practice.
Warren, Rick, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I Here For?  In this best-seller book, Warren asks why we were born and answers with five reasons - for God's pleasure, to have fellowship in God's family, to become ike Christ in discipleship, to serve God in Ministry, and to pursue Mission.
Willard, Dallas, The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life With God.  A refreshing, encouraging and joyful look at Discipleship, freed from shame and focused on a loving God who relentlessly calls us to reconciliation and wholeness.

Other Books
Wallis, Jim, God's Politics.  This book offers a clarion call to make both our religious communities and our government more accountable to key values of the prophetic religious tradition - that is, make them pro-justice, pro-peace, pro-environment, pro-equality, pro-consistent ethic of life (beyond single-issue voting) and pro-family (without making scapegoats of single mothers or gays and lesbians).
Williams, Rowan, A Ray of Darkness.  In this collection of pastoral sermons and addresses, Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, shows how the faith of the creed can still equip Christians for a vigorous and critical engagement with the world of today.
Bernardin, J. B., An Introduction to the Episcopal Church.  Offers an enlightening overview of the Episcopal Church's fascinating history and lore, including the Church year, buildings, symbolism, vestments and customs.
Webber, Christopher L., Welcome to Sunday: An Introduction to Worship in the Episcopal Church.
Black, Vicki K., Welcome to the Church Year: An Introduction to the Seasons of the Episcopal Church.
