R.S.C.M.
The non-adult component of the choir program uses the acclaimed Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Training Scheme as described below. Specific skills and requirements for each level are outlined in a series of cards and accompanying workbook. Time outside rehearsal is set aside weekly for individuals to work on these skills under the supervision of Assistant Organist, Eric Budzynski.

Probationer: A beginner, committed to learning the rudiments of music, structure of the service, expectations of choir membership, and the musical sills necessary to move on to the next level. Probationers sing the congregational parts of the service.

Novice: An intermediate member of the choir who has mastered the basics of: consistency in matching pitch, understanding of basic music theory, conformity to the expectations of choir membership, faithful attendance and participation at choir events.

Chorister (Jr. Chorister, Chorister, Sr. Chorister): A fully-vested member of the choir, responsible for singing all portions of the service, including anthems, psalms, canticles and descants. Choristers are expected to serve as mature, competent members of the choir, providing role models and assisting the Choirmasters and Head Choristers with the younger, less experienced choir personnel.

What is the RSCM?
It is an organisation which has a world-wide membership of churches, colleges, schools and individuals. For seventy-five years it has sought to serve church music by giving help and encouragement to all concerned with music in worship.
  • It reaches out to all denominations within the World Council of Churches and to the Roman Catholic Church, and is now the official music agency for the Church of England.
  • It covers all traditions and has something for everyone – congregations, choirs, worship groups and bands, organists and those in the pulpit – opportunities for improving skills, for more satisfying participation, and for more meaningful worship.
  • Its aim is to enhance worship in whatever situation - church large or small, village or city, plentiful or few resources - through the use of music, and to encourage full participation.
The RSCM now reaches out beyond the church. The "Voice for Life" programme provides training for young singers through to adulthood and is aimed at both church and school choirs with both sacred and secular repertoire suggestions.

Benefits of membership
Membership as a church, school/college, or personal member helps to keep in touch with others and share experiences.

Music, books and training aids are available by mail order with RSCM publications often having a substantial discount for members.

Members all receive the Church Music Quarterly magazine.

There is also an advisory service and the facility for help by local committee members and by Regional and Assistant Regional Directors on the staff of the RSCM.

Local activities
Events are arranged in a variety of venues in the Southwell and Nottinghamshire area, in addition to regional and national events.
